Marina Movie Review
Pasanga happened to be a pleasant and feel-good movie for all universal audiences for its treatment of script with a laudable message on how children can influence the development of a family. Pandiraj indeed won more awards for his best work and later stepped over to choose a different movie Pasanga that was too commercial. Now he is back again with yet another movie based on Children.

This time, it’s too appealing as the film centers on the lives of desolated children, who seek the shores of Marina as their homeland. Pandiraj throws light upon these children, who become vendors selling food items across Marina beach, their hidden pains, buried aspirations and the inevitable problems they face often.

Giving words to delineate the storyline of Marina could be little tough as it doesn’t hold anything specific as a fiction. It’s precisely done in a docu-drama style that focalizes on the lives of several characters especially the children, who come from various parts of the state and get settled down in Marina. On the parallel track, it’s a little humorous drama that revolves around the love drama of Shiva Karthikeyan and Oviya.

The film may seem to be carrying the shades of documentary in places as Pandiraj tries recording the lives of children found across the shores of Marina and in places it leaves a ‘too-preachy’ feeling. But the good message and an engrossing narration keeps us intact throughout the show.

The perfect casting of actors and their naturalistic performances stand out as the major highlight. Shiva Karthikeyan takes a cakewalk through his role tickling our funny bones with his witty liners. Oviya does what is required for the role, but the ultimate showstopper is the child artist of Pasanga fame playing the role of Ambikapathy. A great depth of emotion is showcased through the characterizations of old man and post master.
Musical score by newcomer Girish is good in places and the background score is appreciable.

On the whole, Marina is a praiseworthy film for Pandiraj’s effort to choose an unique theme and after watching this film, if you’re walking through the shores of Marina and find little vendors selling Soondals and other stuffs, you would doubtlessly keep yourself hooked to them for some time.

Thanks to Pandiraj for implanting the feeling within us.

Verdict: One of the best films of 2012
