While you’re all set to watch a film from Selvaraghavan, you have no rooms to guess. The director keeps shifting the parameters from film to film. While Kadhal Kondein was a movie that focused on a lad’s perplexed thoughts of ‘Love’ and ‘Friendship’, ‘7G Rainbow Colony’ was the heartiest piece from Selva on the immortal love. ‘Aayirathil Oruvan’ pushed the bars of Tamil Cinema over the top and it was something like first of its kind, where no one had endeavored with.
‘Mayakkam Enna’ belongs to such a category, where your guesses might go wrong from point to point. The film has some unexpected twists, shock and surprises. Well, don’t expect the film to end a tragic way. Selva brings in a splendid touch of giving an end on positive note. The film centers on the laborious journey of an aspiring photographer Karthik Swaminathan (Dhanush). He leads a simple life with his friends amongst which one of them – Sundar (Sundar) dates Yaamini (Richa Gangopadhay), who in turn falls in love with Karthik. But the story doesn’t have this as a conflict as it is about the relationship between a husband and wife.
If we continue to look more into the story, there wouldn’t be more interests to watch it. Dhanush goes for a remarkable performance in places. Right from the beginning till the end, we see him in various shades. Especially his acting adeptness during second half goes with excellence. Richa Gangopadhyay takes off with a brilliant show and this is quite a great blessing for the actress. She might not gain such a powerful role in her career from now. In fact, in many places she keeps winning applause for her acts. During first half of the movie, her brilliant flashes of performance is revealed through her eye expressions. But Dhanush becomes the major attraction during last 20mins of the film.
But overall, the entire film travels through the eyes of a woman and that’s something unusual from Selvaraghavan.
There aren’t any minuses in the film. Perhaps, the slow-paced moments might irk the audiences, who strongly look for commercial ingredients.
Musically, it’s G.V. Prakash on his best in both songs and background. The song ‘Kadhal En Kadhal’ is a special treat for the audiences and ‘Voda Voda’ has some catchy CG works. Much alike the director’s previous movies, one of the best songs would go missing and here it’s ‘Ennana Seidhom’ . Cinematography and editing is so neat and stands out as one of the major highlights of this movie.
On the whole, ‘Mayakkam Enna’ is a different movie from Selvaraghavan and it can be watched by audiences, who love different cinema.
Verdict: Selvaraghavan’s unusual work in his style.
