Vijay’s previous films didn’t work out at its best due to various reasons. The actor had gone through some wrong selection of movies that includes ‘Kuruvi’, ‘Villu’, ‘Azhagiya Tamizh Magan’ and ‘Kaavalan’. But Ilayathalapathy Vijay has now taken a front seat of making through good selections and ‘Velayudham’ becomes the first of its kind of illustration. Produced by Aascar Ravichandran at a whooping amount, director Raja for the first time goes for a direct approach rather than remaking movies.
In fact, ‘Velayudham’ is inspired from Telugu movie ‘Aazad’ that had Nagarjuna, late actress Soundarya and Shilpa Shetty in lead roles. Genelia D’ Souza and Hansika Motwani – the hotties of South Indian film industry star opposite Vijay in female lead roles while Santhanam takes care of comedy portions. Saranya Mohan gets a meaty role to perform here in the role of a sister.
The film open with terrorists from Pakistan-Afghanistan hatching plans to plot the bomb herein Chennai to disturb the normal life of innocents. They get aid from Home Minister and are on the process of accomplishing with their mission. A reporter (Genelia D Souza) is setting forth with vigorous approach over bringing this dangerous mission into the lights of public, but is attacked by the same group of roughnecks. Somehow, she saves the stabbing and catches the glimpse on her own eyes of these baddies bumped off due to accident. Immediately, she has a spark of idea about bringing a new imaginary character into picture and its Velayudham. She leaves a note that the future plans of terrorists will also get thwarted. Then we have real Velayudham (Vijay) good at heart leaving from his village to Chennai for the sake of getting money he deposited in finance company for the sake of his sister’s (Saranya Mohan). Though he is not aware of his actions of coincidentally saving the city from bombs, his character name of ‘Velayudham’ becomes a sort of highest excitement for the people here. Though the journalist asks him to become the real Velayudham, he doesn’t take up the mission as all his dreams are about living for the happiness of his sister. But the story takes an abrupt turn when the finance company loots away all the money and leaves hundreds and thousands of poor innocents desolated. Now it’s his turn to become the real Velayudham and bash down the baddies, bring justice to everyone and finally leave a strong message that he isn’t the only Velayudham, but everyone within must feel the same.
As usual, the film has all the ingredients of a Vijay movie and there isn’t anything that goes boring. Right from the beginning till the end, Ilayathalapathy Vijay keeps us entertained. The songs, comedy sequences, sentiments, glamorous quotients by the lead ladies are so enchanting.
Soon after interval, there are little portions that keep us restless due to continuous action blocks, but then it becomes perfect with Raja’s writing. Songs by Vijay Anthony is over the top as it entertains to the core of everyone’s expectations.
On the whole, ‘Velayudham’ marks the comeback of actor Vijay, who had most of his previous films not so good in its places. Following ‘Mankatha’, this film will make a good mark in the box office of 2011.
Verdict: Go watch it along with your family…
